LAPINcontemporary is pleased to present Elements, an exhibition of sculptures by John Gerding, at 60 Roberts Drive, studio 308, in North Adams, MA.
Elements is an exploration of the interplay between diverse materials through sculptural form. John Gerding’s work focuses on themes of texture, contrast, and the dialogue between industrial and organic elements. The choice of materials—wood, stone, and metal—forms a cohesive aesthetic language. Each piece aims to evoke visual tension through the interaction of smooth, polished surfaces and rough textures, inviting viewers to delve into a more intimate engagement with the artworks.
The concept of elements encompasses a variety of materials and components, including organic materials, man-made materials fabricated by the artist, and found objects. A crucial aspect of Gerding’s work is the craftsmanship involved in transforming these materials into abstract forms that convey hidden narratives.
Viewers are encouraged to connect with the materials, understanding them as components that reveal the artist's inner stories. The interaction among different textures is enhanced by the artist's skill in fabricating parts, fostering a deeper engagement with the artworks' physicality.

"The pieces exhibited in this show are a culmination of many years work. Some pieces have more serious themes and others are just for fun. Whether it be antique furniture or cars or old machines, I’ve always been drawn to older things. I like to give my sculptures a sense of age, sometimes I may use old objects I find and sometimes I may create a part of a piece and make it look like a found object. Sometimes there may be a specific idea or plan to a sculpture, other times things just come together and/or evolve.” — John Gerding.
