Drawings by Douglas Gilbert
Douglas Gilbert | Path VI, 2026 | graphite and charcoal on archival paper | 20 x 28 inches
North Adams, MA – LAPINcontemporary is pleased to present Nature Interrupted, a new exhibition of drawings by Douglas Gilbert, on view May 15 through June 28, 2026, at 60 Roberts Drive, Studio 308, North Adams, MA. This series explores the experience of moving through a landscape that feels both familiar and uncertain, where a path emerges not as a fixed destination, but as a space of approach.
Across the works, the viewer is positioned at a threshold, advancing toward something that remains unresolved. Vertical forms line these paths, suggesting trees, structures, or clustered elements of the natural world, yet they resist stable definition. Shifting in scale and proximity, they alternately press forward and recede, creating a tension between openness and compression. These forms act as interruptions, echoing the experience of roads cutting through nature, where the landscape is divided yet continues to grow on either side.
Constructed through the accumulation of thousands of graphite lines, Gilbert’s drawings develop through variations in density rather than traditional modeling. Darker, more compact areas advance toward the viewer, while lighter, more dispersed marks recede, forming spatial fields shaped by memory and perception. Light and dark operate not as descriptive tools, but as experiential elements, reflecting how landscape is remembered rather than directly observed.
While each work stands independently, the exhibition unfolds as a sequence of encounters. Some spaces feel compressed, others more open, yet none are fixed in meaning. The sense of passage persists, but remains unstable, shaped by uncertainty, anticipation, and the possibility of what lies just beyond view.
Rooted in observation yet transformed through abstraction, Gilbert’s drawings are less concerned with depicting a specific place than with holding a feeling. They reflect a meditative engagement with landscape, where form, memory, and perception converge, leaving the image open for each viewer’s experience.
LAPINcontemporary is an evolving gallery space centered on the work of Douglas Gilbert. While its current program is focused on a single artistic practice, the space remains open to future exhibitions and dialogues with other artists. Extending beyond its physical setting, LAPINcontemporary also exists as a digital platform and welcomes visitors by appointment, offering a more intimate and deliberate way of engaging with art.
